The total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026

Some journeys are never forgotten. From 8 to 15 August 2026, a special study tour with Studiosus will take us to the Balearic island of Mallorca – where one of the most impressive natural spectacles of all awaits us: the total solar eclipse on 12 August. Together with my colleague Stefan Seip, we will accompany our tour group on a journey following the sun, the moon and science. Look forward to a week full of fascinating celestial observations, exciting insights into astronomy and unforgettable moments under the Mediterranean sky.

Why solar eclipses continue to fascinate scientists to this day

A total solar eclipse is far more than just a spectacular natural phenomenon. For scientists, it opens up a rare window of opportunity to observe phenomena that are otherwise overshadowed by the sun’s blinding light. Of particular interest is the solar corona – the Sun’s outer atmosphere, which reaches temperatures of millions of degrees. During a total eclipse, it suddenly becomes visible and can be studied with great precision. Researchers gain important insights into the Sun’s magnetic field, the solar wind and processes that also influence space weather. This can affect satellites, navigation systems and even power grids on Earth.

Our atmosphere also reacts to the sudden darkening. Temperature, wind and the ionosphere change within a matter of minutes – creating a unique open-air laboratory for meteorology and geophysics. Historically, solar eclipses have even revolutionised physics: in 1919, observations of a total eclipse confirmed Albert Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity for the first time. This shows that solar eclipses are not only fascinating experiences for millions of people, but also valuable moments in which nature reveals a little more of its secrets to science.
